Development and current trends of FTTH technology

Fiber to the home (FTTH) is a modern optical network access technology. At present, triple play services and high-speed Internet access are now widely accepted by most people around the world.
Even so, people's desire to increase Internet speed is still widespread, which has prompted fierce competition between telecommunications companies (and their copper cable networks) and cable companies (and their coaxial networks). The competition revealed the fact that access to the Internet through copper wires has reached its limit, and the only hope for increasing bandwidth in the future is to install optical fibers.

Current trends of FTTH

The situation of FTTH solution on a global scale is very inconsistent. The deployment of optical fiber to homes and the use of standards in any country depends on the history of broadband Internet access in a particular country/region, regional inconsistencies, issues of local telecommunications companies and technology.  As telecom operators will increase the adoption of home fiber optics, the compound annual growth rate of the global home fiber optic market will be positive. Among all regions, North America and Japan will become the world's highest market share for household optical fiber. The regions with the lowest FTTH penetration rate are the Middle East and Africa (MEA) and Latin America. Online books, intelligent systems, online entertainment, advanced cloud computing, e-government, e-learning and e-health are the driving forces that will drive the growth of FTTH in the next decade.

Development of FTTH Technology

The FTTH technology is not a new concept. France, Canada, and Japan began to study the fiber-to-the-home implementation in 1978, and the United States also join the research in 1995. But it died in the end because of the high cost and lack of market demand. With the continuous advancement of technology, the needs of various countries for the development of the information society and the drive of various telecommunications policies, the application of FTTH technology has entered an era of great strides since 2004. Among them, Japan is the most enthusiastic country in the world for FTTH. The development of FTTH has been in a leading position. As of 2007, there have been more than 10 million FTTH users in Japan. It is expected to reach 20 million households by 2010. In the United States, Verizon is the most active service provider in promoting FTTH services and has begun to provide HD Digital TV services. As of 2005, it has covered 3 million users. The development of FTTH in Europe was slow. Until the end of 2002, two FTTH operators in Europe-Sweden's B2 company and Italy's E. biscom has a total of 160,000 FTTH users.

What can FTTH bring us?

Fiber to the home (FTTH) is a transmission method of optical fiber communication, which directly connects the optical fiber to the user's home or where the user needs it. This optical fiber communication method realizes the "last mile" information transmission. Its advantages: firstly, information dissemination is fast, secondly, it is convenient to contact, and thirdly, it improves efficiency, which will greatly improve people's quality of life and work efficiency.
